The opposition is Ripe
3,259 wines from 788 wineries entered in the 2011 Finger Lakes Competition, the greatest variety of participants ever; even beating last year’s record splitting numbers. The recession has proven to end well from this industry. There was participation from 19 nations. All of the fifty United States had an entry from somebody. There were 4 person panels that the sixty judges were put into. The fine wine winners were decided depending on this. These judges didn’t go easy either, as head judge Linda King described one wine as, “something the nostril would mistake for a burning fire in a smoky cabin.” The highest 4 winners are listed below:
- Top Riesling: Zugibe Vineyard’s 2009 Late Harvest Riesling
- Best Ice Wine: Vignoble Rivière du Chene Winery’s 2009 Monde
- Best in Show top Chardonnay: Santa Barbara Winery of California’s 2008 Reserve Chardonnay
- Best in Show top Cabernet Sauvignon: J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines’s 2007 Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon
