For the avid amateur wine collector, not quite yet the connoisseur, a home wine cellar may be just the place to start a fine hobby in. Location, location and location come to mind. The basement if there was one, but if not the garage would have to do, or just to build one from scratch on the coolest side of the property. Not quite the dungeon comes to mind when building your own home wine cellar but definitely something cold and dark as one. The plotting and planning of the wine cellar construction is carefully laid out, drafting rough plans and layouts, making small changes here and there before you take it finally to the draftsman for a final print and then approval from council. For a moment you may actually think instead of making the home wine cellar you are actually doing architectural drawings for a hobby, you nearly misplaced your priorities about your new found hobby.
The space you wish is not quite the size that you actually have for your home wine cellar and so therefore compromises and adjustments had to be made. You couldn’t afford the original sandstone to build with, so the only other option would be normal brickwork and a bit of creative genius could do the trick just as well, giving it that authentic old style cellar look. You had to do away with the arches, as there was just not enough space overall for them, so the only other alternative was to make the entrance with an archway door, still of battered and carved dark hardwood and cast iron monger, hoping there is at least a creak on the heavy door when you open it, as if you were opening your own personal vault.
But what you landed up finally with was not what you initially envisioned as your dream home wine cellar. Instead with all the compromises, you landed up with a small space in the corner of the garage that you had partitioned off to keep as much traffic and light out of. You are not totally pleased but it will suffice for now, as you still envision your dream cellar that you may one day still build from sandstone and lime, a good few arches as you walk through from chamber to chamber and not to mention all the oak kegs that you would have collected over the years to show off how serious you are.
